Many concrete slabs used for construction of road are lying carelessly on lanes where vehicles move with high speed.
MUMBAI: 'Please bear with us for a better tomorrow' read the numerous boards put up by Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) across the Western Express Highway. However, if the prevailing conditions are not changed quickly, many motorists will not survive to see this 'better tomorrow'. In what seems to be a blatant violation of road safety rules and gross negligence on part of MMRDA and its contractors, the many concrete slabs being used for the construction of road dividers are found lying carelessly alongside the roads, especially on lanes where vehicles move with high speed.
Apart from these dangerous hurdles, what further exposes motorists to high risk is the gravel spilling over on the roads at many spots, especially near signals. Trenches that have been dug up have neither been barricaded nor any danger sign near them.
When asked to comment on the careless manner in which work was being carried on, motorists agreed that such improvement work should be done not at public risk but after making public safety a priority. A senior civic engineer admitted that the MMRDA's failure to put appropriate signs and barricades near construction sites. He said, "Road safety rules make it necessary to put up all the signs and barricading, but the MMRDA contractors have not done so." When contacted, a senior MMRDA official who did not wished to be named, agreed to the anomaly and assured that he would immediately pull up all the concerned contractors so that their work does not interrupt the traffic on city roads.
